Seward, Alaska Resurrection Bay
1-Day Alaska Railroad and Seward Sea Kayaking Tour Package Departing From Anchorage
This scenic Alaska Railroad and Alaska sea kayaking tour package departs from the city of Anchorage. Your adventure starts with a scenic train ride on the Alaska Railroad's Coastal Classic Train to Seward, Alaska. The train follows the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm for about 50 miles before heading into the mountains. The Seward Highway has been designated an All-American Road, USDA Forest Service Scenic Byway, and Alaska Scenic Byway. Turnagain Arm has tides with the second greatest fluctuation in North America, varying more than 40 feet. Beluga whales and Dall sheep are frequently seen along this section of Turnagain Arm.
Leaving Turnagain Arm the train heads up into the Kenai Mountains towards Grandview Valley where you'll travel through lush spruce and birch forests. Keep your eyes open for the occasional moose along the railroad and to see the many hanging glaciers. There's Bartlett Glacier, Trail Glacier, and Spencer Glacier, which stands out as one of the most beautiful glaciers along the southern railbelt.
Our guides will be standing by at Seward Railroad Depot when you arrive. From there we take short drive to Lowell Point on the outskirts of Seward and launch our sea kayaks and head out to explore the historic Resurrection Bay named by Alexander Baranof, an early Russian Alaska explorer and fur trader.
Your Resurrection Bay Seward Sea Kayaking adventure will take us out to Tonsina Point's ghost forest, a remnant of the 1964 earthquake. Alaska's 1964 earthquake was the largest quake recorded in North America. The ground at Tonsina Point sank exposing the tree roots to saltwater, killing the trees but preserving the standing trees. If the tides are right we might be able to paddle up into the month of Tonsina Creek to see the spawning salmon.
While exploring Resurrection Bay our naturalist guides will share the rich national history with you while viewing the jagged cliffs, seabirds, marine wildlife and alpine glaciers. Often seen are sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals, seabirds, bald eagles, jumping salmon and occasionally we see whales that venture into the bay.
Returning to Lowell Point we meet our shuttle driver and return everyone back to the Seward Railroad Depot for your train ride back to Anchorage.
This trip can be customized. Available options include GoldStar first class train upgrade on both legs or you can go first class one-way and regular seats one-way. It is also possible is to stay overnight in Seward and return the following day, giving you time to include a whale watching glacier cruise.
